Simple skin care routine for acne
sufferers
Below is a simple acne prone skin care
regimen that works regardless of your skin type:
1. Wash your
face no more than TWICE a day. Here's how to
do it:
a) Use a gentle soap like Dove or Ivory (although
Dove is technically not a soap)
b) Wet the soap with warm water
c) Gently lather the soap on your skin in a circular
motion using your fingers or a soft washcloth
d) Thoroughly rinse your face with warm water
(should take no more than a few seconds)
e) Gently pat your skin dry using a clean, soft
towel
This simple acne prone skin care face washing
technique will go a long way towards helping your overall
condition.

2. Protect yourself from
the sun
This is especially important
for acne sufferers. You may have heard that a small
amount of sun exposure can actually help your acne.
While there may be some truth to this in the short term,
over-exposure to UVA and UVB rays will actually make
your acne worse in the long run.
Here's why...
Excessive sun dries out your skin, which causes your
sebaceous glands to kick into overdrive.
The result? Excess oil.
Exposure to the sun also damages your skin. Your body's
natural response to damaged skin is to repair itself by
sloughing off the old skin and replacing it with new,
healthy skin (you've seen this first hand if you've ever
peeled after a sun burn).
The result? Excess dead skin cells.
So what's the big deal?
Excess oil + Excess dead skin
cells = Clogged pores
And clogged pores are the root cause of most acne
blemishes.
So a good acne prone skin care regimen requires that you
be sun-smart and do things like wear sunscreen and avoid
tanning salons.
Determing
your skin type
The remaining elements of our recommended acne prone skin
care regimen depend on your skin type. So the next thing you
need to do is identify whether your skin is normal, oily, dry,
or sensitive.
Read the descriptions below and choose the category that
BEST describes you. You may find that not every bullet in a
particular category applies to you, but if MOST of them fit,
you've found your skin type.
Normal
- In the morning, there is little to no change in my skin
from the night before
- About 15 minutes after washing my face, my skin is not
too oily or tight
- I can see some small pores around my nose
Oily
- My skin is oily or shiny all over or on my forehead,
nose, and chin
- My pores are large and obvious, especially around my
nose
- I tend to break out often

- My skin feels tight when I wake up or shortly after
washing
- My skin is flaky and dull-looking
- I can barely see my pores
- My skin is itchy
Sensitive
- My skin, even when acne-free, looks red and
blotchy
- My skin is itchy in areas where it is red
- I have allergic reactions to topical products or to
certain foods
