Easy Acne Skin
Care System that Really Works
A good acne skin care system must take into
consideration your skin type. People with different skin
types need to do different things to maintain a healthy
complexion.
Below you will find advice broken out by skin type. You'll
also find inexpensive over-the-counter product
recommendations.
Acne
skin care system by skin type
Sensitive skin:
- Instead of using soap to wash your face, use a soap
substitute specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
- Some good products are Cetaphil, Aquanil, and
Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser (our personal
favorite).
Oily (or Combination) skin:
- Don't use a moisturizer.
- Don't over wash your face. If you have problems with
oiliness throughout the day, gently remove excess oil with
a gentle astringent.
- Some good products are Neutrogena's Clear Pore
Oil-Controlling Astringent, Noxzema Triple Clean
Astringent, and Clean & Clear's Advanced Acne
Pads.

Dry skin:
Acne treatments often dry out your skin, which can lead to
excessive dryness. It can become even worse during the winter
months when humidity is low.
- Don't over wash your face -- this typically makes
dryness worse.
- Use a mild soap or soap substitute. See some product
recommendations in the sensitive skin section above.
- Use a noncomedogenic moisturizer on a regular basis
("noncomedogenic" means it won't clog your pores). A good
product is Oil of Olay (our personal favorite).
TKO Tip:
Apply a moisturizer when your skin is damp. Moisturizers
don't add moisture; rather they help keep water in your
skin by slowing the evaporation process.
TKO
Mythbuster: If you are normally hydrated, ingesting
large quantities of water will not improve your dry
skin.
Normal skin:
- Consider yourself lucky if you have normal skin (and
forgive the rest of us if we jealously throw rotten
tomatoes your way). Your basic acne skin care system is
about as basic as it gets. Aside from washing your face and
limiting sun
exposure, you're pretty much home free.
Top 5
skin care mistakes
A good acne skin care system involves doing things the right
way to keep your skin healthy, but it's also important to avoid
some common mistakes that can harm your skin.
Here are the top 5 skin care mistakes that cause people to
unwittingly damage their skin every day.
- Stay away from soaps that contain harsh ingredients
and/or exfoliants
- Do not use a medicated soap if you're already using a
product containing those same ingredients
- Do not use loofahs, sponges, rough cloths, or other
abrasive materials to wash your face
- Do not scrub or run when washing or drying
- Do not wash more than twice a day -- any more
frequently is excessive and can irritate your acne
For those with acne-free skin, the negative effects may not
be evident for many years. But for those with acne, these
mistakes can immediately irritate your skin, causing increased
redness and swelling.
