Using Baking Soda Acne is Controversial, but Many Claim Success

Using baking soda acne to treat skin blemishes is a practice you may or may not have heard of, but among those who have tried it, most have been satisfied with its ability to get rid of acne.

Baking soda can help eliminate acne scars, as well as improve other skin problems, like wrinkling and redness. It contains sodium bicarbonate, a pH neutral and non-toxic chemical that has many health and beauty applications. People have used it to exfoliate, brush their teeth, wash their hair, and soothe a bee sting.

How to use baking soda for acne

To apply the baking soda:

  1. Create a paste

Mix one teaspoon of baking soda powder with two teaspoons of water (be sure you don't confuse baking soda with baking powder). This is an external treatment – the baking soda paste is not ingested.
  2. Apply the baking soda acne directly on the acne

Gently massage it in for 10 to 15 seconds. You can leave it on for a few minutes as a mask, but no more than twenty minutes max.
  3. Rinse it off completely and pat your skin dry.

When applied properly, you may notice the effects in as little as 24 hours. For others, it can take a few days or even longer. As with most remedies, actual results vary from person to person. It may be a good idea to ease into a new baking soda regimen by trying it out once or twice a week in the beginning, then increasing the frequency as your skin becomes used to the baking soda. Some people use it daily as part of their morning or evening routine.

Baking soda and acne - the downsides

Though many swear by the benefits of using baking soda acne, there are some who consider it a controversial method of treatment. Those who have found success with it usually ignore the downsides – but as with most things, it is a good idea to consider all views before jumping in headfirst.

One downside to using baking soda acne is that, because it is a chemical, it could cause some sort of skin reaction. This is especially true if you have sensitive skin, so you may want to test on a small area first. Another downside is that it could cause excessive dryness. In addition, it could burn or make your acne worse in the short term. For most, this is a temporary condition as the baking soda starts to work on clearing up your skin. Other people experience nothing but a tingling sensation, which is quite normal. For most, though, there is little to no skin irritation.

Baking soda acne treatment for scars

Using baking soda for acne causes acne scars to fade by exfoliating the affected area and effectively removing the topmost layer of skin. This process reveals new, non-scarred areas lying underneath. Removing dead skin and unclogging pores leaves your skin softer and more vibrant. It also helps dry up the oil on your skin without alcohol or other harsh ingredients. The fact that it is fragrance-free is an added benefit if you're sensitive to perfumes and other scents commonly used in cosmetics.

Keep in mind that while baking soda acne will help remove scars and redness, it may not prevent new blackheads and whiteheads from forming. But for a great natural and inexpensive treatment, baking soda acne can't be beat.
